Nature comes to Vienna

Vienna’s Gürtel road is set to become home to dozens of varieties of flora and fauna in its Margareten district section.

Students and scientists from the University of Agriculture are taking part in a project to make the area more green. And they hope that the introduction of different kinds of vegetation will attract birds and insects to the belt.

Margareten director, Kurt Wimmer (SPÖ), says the idea to bring more nature into the inner city is already working. Plants such as the common mullein, chyrsanthemums, rocket and German pinks have already taken up residence along the Gürtel.

The extended flora means insects have got a wider choice of pollen and likewise breeding birds will have more insects to feed on.
