Farmer fined who starved pigs to death

A farmer who left dozens of pigs to die a painful death from starvation because she was feeling depressed has been slapped with a fine of just 550 Euros by council officials at Werndorf near Graz in Styria.

The court heard that when a local council vet visited the farm in January for a routine checkup, he found 35 dead pigs and the others so thin that their skeletons could be easily seen through their skin.

The pigs that were still alive were moved to a new location and the local council officer responsible for animal welfare, Barbara Fiala-Köck, defended the decision for the low fine saying it was dependent on income which for the woman concerned was very low.

She said that the 44-year-old farmer was also facing a court action that could result in a ban on keeping any other animals.
