High voltage cable zaps man with 15,000 volts
An Austrian man is in intensive care after he climbed onto a train in a goods yard to cross over what he thought was the live rail – and was zapped with 15,000 volts from an overhead power line.
The 32-year-old man was with two women aged 27 and 26 who were taking a shortcut through the goods yard in Innsbruck. A police spokesman said: "They mistakenly thought there was a high-voltage line running along the ground."
Although the man had not touched the overhead line medics warned that it was enough simply to come near to it for electricity to try to earth itself through a person.
The man was treated at Innsbruck hospital where he has severe burns and is in intensive care.
The older of the two young women was also slightly burned as she had also tried to cross the track via the carriage.
