Austria among countries to help Romania hit by floods

The Austrian government has pledged to help flood-stricken Romania which saw over 12,000 people evacuated from its northeastern area over the weekend.

Austria is one of the four countries, next to Belgium, France and Estonia, that answered Romania's call for assistance, after the Eastern European country activated the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism.

Romania has asked for help in the form of inflatable dams, pumps, power generators, water purification systems, lighting kits and other material, the European Commission said.

Romanian PM Emil Boc said today (Mon) that the government would evaluate the damages caused by the floods and will submit documents to access the European Union’s Solidarity Fund by 15 July.

Austria will send ten dirty water pumps and three power generators, which will arrive in Romania on Monday night. Belgium also sent eleven pumps, five power generators, one water purification unit and its conditioning unit, all manned by six people.

Twenty two people died, one is missing and around 12,000 were evacuated following severe flooding in north-eastern Romania last week. A red alert for flooding on Siret and Prut rivers, in eastern Romania, is on until Tuesday night.

Eastern counties Galati and Braila are also in high danger of floods as the level of the Danube rose to historic levels, of nearly 7 meters.
