Girl drowns after removing water wings
An Upper Austrian girl has drowned in a backyard swimming pool just two days before her fourth birthday.
Police in Grieskirchen said today (Fri) the child had taken off her water wings when her mother popped into the kitchen yesterday afternoon, leaving her alone.
The 36-year-old returned to find her child’s motionless body floating in the small pool.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate the girl for around half an hour.
Vienna is meanwhile deploring the death of two swimmers within 24 hours.
City officials said a 17-year-old girl died when 35-minute-long resuscitation attempts failed after she disappeared in the waters of the Neue Donau branch of the Danube earlier this week. A female pal of the same age needed treatment after suffering a nervous breakdown as she watched paramedics attempt to bring her back to life.
The body of an Afghan man was later found in the free of charge swimming area not far from where the teen died. The 27-year-old drowned as he tried to cross the river with some mates.
Sixty-four people drowned in Austria last year, according to official statistics provided by Statistik Austria.
