Two dead as car crashes into petrol station

Two people died when a car crashed into a petrol station in Tyrol yesterday (Tues).

The driver of the BMW registered in Salzburg and a 54-year-old Japanese tourist – who was fuelling his hired car – died in the dramatic incident.

Several petrol pumps exploded after being rammed by the car which came to a standstill in the shop of the Agip station near Matrei on the A13 Brenner motorway.

The identity of the driver and the cause of the crash is still unclear. He died instantly in his detonated car, while the Japanese man passed away at a clinic in Innsbruck hours later.

Two fellow Japanese holidaymakers suffered serious injuries, while none of the dozens of customers who were at the station when the car slammed into it were harmed.

The A13 is a key route for tourists travelling to destinations in Italy by car.

Station manager Martin Jenewein said: "I dashed outside immediately after hearing a loud bang. I still can't believe what happened."
