German boy seriously injured in freak sledging crash
An eleven-year-old boy is in a critical state after a sledging accident in Vorarlberg.
Lech am Arlberg authorities said today (Thurs) the German tourist plunged down an almost vertical embankment after smashing through a safety net at a toboggan track on Tuesday evening.
Officials said the child – from Ahrensburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein – was hospitalised with serious injuries after the six-metre fall.
More than 58,100 of the ten million people skiing, snowboarding and sledging in the Austrian Alps in the 2008/2009 winter season ended up in hospital, according to statistics provided by the Austrian Committee for Traffic Safety (KfV).
