Hiker killed after 80-metre fall

A pensioner died after she fell 80 metres down a rocky hill as she hiked yesterday (Weds) near Reichenau an der Rax in Lower Austria’s Neunkirchen district.

Police said the 71-year-old woman had wandered off on her own from a group she had been with into a steep, rocky area covered with snow.

Rescuers found her still alive three hours after she failed to return to her hotel. But they said she died as she was taken to hospital by helicopter.
