EXIT project for pupils
Absenteeism is the start of a slippery slope towards a failure to graduate and a life at risk of delinquency.
But a new project - the "EXIT" project - has been launched to nip the problem in the bud by helping absentee kids now - before it is too late.
In total 13 schools in Austria were picked out this year to try out the new project EXIT.
Social workers will be sent to schools to show the students that finishing school is not an annoying obligation, but an important part of their life.
Studies show that the chance of getting a job without a school graduation certificate is three times lower than with one.
Thomas Eminger from the Volkshilfe (Public aid) Burgenland says that the point of the EXIT project is to give students the chance to talk about problems of any kind.
The social workers will be at the schools twice a week for four hours to talk to them and the conversation are handled with full discretion, he said.
