Education officials in Austria are to introduce yodelling classes for pupils in a bid to wean them off pop music and reconnect them to their traditional past.

"Yodelling isn't just about good music. It's about being in touch with your whole body and showing what you can do," said Austrian Folk Music Association president Konrad Kostlin.

The decision will involve yodelling schoolbooks and CDs being distributed to schools across the country.

The Austrian Folk Music Association has already run successful yodelling courses for foreigners and Kostlin said: "In previous times yodelling was really important because it wasn't just about good music – it was also about people being in touch with their bodies. You use the whole body to yodel and it was a way of presenting yourself and showing what you can do."

He added that it was also a way for kids to get in touch with their traditional routes and to help in reaching out to others.

He said: "Yodelling is fascinating for everyone and it's understandably becoming popular again. It's the perfect time to start to make sure that our young people know about the rich tradition that yodelling represents."
