Rent a gran project for kids
Older men and women are being signed up to help school children in immigrant families to learn German and integrate better in schools as a result.
As part of the so-called grandma and grandpa project – between 20 and 50 people are going to be signed up to expand the already successful concept.
The idea has already been in operation in Ottakring for three years where 16 Volksschul children within immigrant background are getting practice in speaking German.
Interested candidates are currently being looked for and from autumn there will be twice as many involved in the project in Vienna and Krems.
The initiator of the project Michaela Dirnbacher said that the older people involved in the project tried to encourage personal development and help children overcome points which were difficult such as when language skills were lacking.
She said that the project so far has seen considerable improvement in the school results of those involved.
