Baby meerkats at Schönbrunn

Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo has yet more baby animals.

These four cute baby meerkats have emerged form their den after being born on August 7th.

Zoo director Dagmar Schratter said: "The meerkats were born after a normal 11 week pregnancy. When born they are blind and have no fur."

The meerkats spend a few weeks in the den before they emerge.

Schratter said: "The meerkats are still being fed by their mother. But all the other meerkats in the colony are taking their turns at babysitting."

Meerkat colonies are renowned for their team work and togetherness. Every member of the colony has a responsibility - they change from babysittting, watch duty and digging tunnels.

Since April Schönbrunn's meerkats have a new home - they now live in the monkey house at the zoo.

Schratter said: "To enable the animals to have a peaceful time with their new babies they have been temporarily separated from the monkeys by a glass panel.
