Zoo race raises 30,000 for charity

Around 1350 runners took part in the first Vienna zoo race at the Tiergarten Schönbrunn.

The contestants had to race along the 6 km track set up through the zoo that went past the elephant and line closures. The money raised from the race which was around €30,000 will be divided up between the charity "Help for lung disease" and also towards building the new polar bear enclosure.

Among those taking part was celebrity Christina Lugner and Radio Wien weather expert Gerald Holzinger.

The cabarettist Christoph Fälbl who was also scheduled to take part had to end up simply being a watcher after suffering from a motorbike accident that put him out of action.

He said: "I think it's great that the zoo animals have something to look at instead of the other way around."
