Vienna becomes coffee capital for the first time

From June 13-15, 2012, Vienna will be at the heart of the coffee cosmos. SCAE World of Coffee will give trade experts and coffee lovers an insight into the latest industry trends. This festival of all things coffee also includes the World Barista Championship.

Organized by the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE), this event will take place in Vienna for the first time in 2012, following previous instalments in London and Bogota.

SCAE World of Coffee is highly regarded as a major international get-together for leading international coffee industry professionals, with this year's meet expected to attract 12,000 visitors from more than 50 countries worldwide.

The highlight of the three day event is the World Barista Championship which will play out in four different disciplines. Leading baristas from 50 different countries will present their very own coffee creations to the jury as they battle for the title.

Thanks to its legendary coffeehouse culture, the Austrian capital is the ideal location for the world's largest coffee industry event. The first Viennese coffeehouse opened its doors in the capital in the 17th century. Today there are around 800 coffee houses in Vienna, and that's not including the countless café bars, café restaurants, and smaller bistro cafés with standing spaces only.

Viennese coffeehouse culture was included in the national UNESCO list of intangible cultural assets in 2011.
