Mobile phone parking system a flop
The recently introduced method of paying for parking on the mobile phone in short parking zones throughout Salzburg has proved unpopular.
The company who first started running the new system has given up on the project claiming it is impossible to carry on and impossible to find a method which is economically viable.
ÖVP Vice Mayor Harald Preuner was surprised by the news.
He said: "In other Austrian cities the mobile phone payment method is very successful."
According to reports many people in Salzburg are put off by the extra costs such as transaction costs and monthly fees involved with paying via mobile phone for parking tickets.
Salzburg in comparison to other provinces already has high parking charges.
Preuner believes the fact the system works so well in other provinces must lay in the fact that they invest heavily in advertising the system.
Salzburg did not invest any budget in advertising the system and does not contribute any funding to the mobile phone payment system.
