Austrians top consumer lists

There are no signs of an economic crisis in Austria as consumers continue to spend.

According to two economic climate surveys, shoppers aren’t feeling the effects of the current crisis spreading across the rest of the continent.

If they are worried about anything, its the increase in living costs, with a third of consumers admitting rising prices of essentials such as fuel and food was their biggest fear.

According to one opinion poll carried out by Generali, Austrians „are continuing to spend despite cut backs.

„They don’t feel directly affected by the crisis in Europe."

But the survey also found that 67 per cent of those ask are concerned about rising living costs, which are threatening the way in which they currently live. That’s an increase of 21 per cent on the previous year.

The studies also found that economic activity is at its highest since the start of the year. Following a downturn in January, figures for May show business is on the up. But overall, revenues are still in minus figures, lying just below the zero line.

On a European scale, only Germany lies ahead of Austria in terms of consumerism. Languishing at the bottom of the spending tables are Greece, Portugal and Britain.
