New regulations of energy prices

A new law on energy prices could be implemented soon. This law is supposed to clarify how energy providers set their prices of electricity, gas, and district heating.

The prices for energy are expected to rise, but, this new law could reduce the price increase.

So far this law is only a government bill, but if this law is enforced, utility companies have to reveal their price calculations to the Federal Competition Authority and the energy regulator.

Theo Thanner, the director of the Federal Competition Authority, welcomes this law. He thinks that they, as officials of the Federal Competition Authority, can influence the pricing and rising prices.

If they do not think that the prices are justifiable they can initiate further steps, even legal steps.

Mr Thanner states that the law will be of advantage when it comes to the rising energy prices. It is a useful instrument in order to determine whether the price increase is justified or not.

The bill will be decided on by the parliament in autumn.
