Wiener Hafen business is booming
Last year the Wiener Hafen group that operates the port of Vienna, increased its revenue by 6.7 percent, which adds up to sales of 50,8 Million Euros.
The port of Vienna has an area of 3.5 million square metres.
The Wiener Hafen group is part of the Wien Holding group and with its subsidiaries it operates three large cargo terminals including the corresponding infrastructure: Freudenau harbour, Albern harbour and Lobau oil terminal.
These three harbours handle around 1,700 cargo vessels a year.
The Danube is used mainly for the transport of oil products, road salt, building materials such as cement, sand or steel products, and agricultural products such as grain and fertilisers.
The passenger terminal close to the Reichsbrücke bridge and Marina Wien are also part of the Wiener Hafen group.
Right now the usable space of the harbour is reduced because of construction work to expand the available area. Approximately 11 million Euros are being spent for the modernisation and expansion of the harbour.
Especially the container business is booming. According to the executive director of Wiener Hafen - Holding, Peter Hanke, the container business increased by 38 per cent. Around 442,000 containers have been registered and the occupancy rate of storage space is 92 percent.
Also the number of cars handled increased by 24 per cent in comparison to 2010. The amount of bulk materials and heavy cargo stayed the same as in 2010.
Not only ships call at the port, there is also a brisk railway service operating.
According to the Management of the Wiener Hafen, there are around 100 train connections between Wiener Hafen and important European harbours on a weekly basis.
