World's richest man looks to buy Austria Telekom

The world's richest man Carlos Slim Helu, 72, is reportedly interested in taking over Telekom Austria.

With a fortune of 55 billion Euros he is the world's richest man with 8 billion more than the Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

He has already obtained 4.1% of Telekom Austria and is now reportedly interested in obtaining the 21% owned by the Vienna investor Ronnie Pecik. It is rumoured that he is prepared to pay €885 million for the share.

If the deal goes through it will give him almost 25% and make him the second-biggest shareholder after the Austrian ÖIAG which has 28.42%.

The telecom industry is at the core of the multi billionaires business empire since 1990 when he snapped up the former Mexican telephone company Telmex.

He is now reportedly looking for opportunities in Europe and Telekom Austria is next on his list.
