Big three get together for Brenner rest stop project

Three of Austria’s biggest companies have teamed up to build and run a motorway rest stop in Tyrol.

Construction top dog Strabag will start building a restaurant and petrol station at the site of the former customs police office at the Austrian-Italian border, it emerged today (Mon).

Lower Austrian firm Rosenberger will run the venue’s restaurant, while leading oil and gas company OMV is set to manage the planned petrol station.

Overall investments in the project make around 11 million Euros, it has been announced. Strabag, which is headquartered in Vienna, will start work next month.

Officials said the plan was to start business at the rest stop next summer.

It meanwhile emerged that a South Tyrolean consortium planned to set up a new rest stop on the other side of the border – just a few hundred metres from the Austrian project.

The Brenner motorway (A13) is one of the busiest holiday travel connections in Europe. Around 16 million vehicles are recorded on the A13 every year.
