Nine die as Al-Qaeda attacks OMV oil field in Yemen

Al-Qaeda terrorists are suspected of being behind an attack on soldiers protecting a oil drilling site in Yemen run by Austrian firm OMV.

The country’s defence ministry announced today (Mon) six soldiers and three attackers died in yesterday’s incident in the province of Shabwah.

Ali Abdullah Salih, President of Yemen, only recently pledged to increase efforts in fighting terrorism in the country which has been labelled a popular hideaway for Al-Qaeda to recruit and train its troops.

OMV, one of Europe’s biggest oil and gas companies, operates in countries all over the world. Its net profit dropped by 58 per cent year on year to 572 million Euros in 2009, while annual turnover fell by 30 per cent to 17.92 billion Euros.
