Wuff guide for dogs

City dogs that want an Alpine break are being offered training courses in country life that include how to use a chairlift and how to avoid trouble with cows.

The training sessions were organised by a hotel in Carinthia that specialises in doggy holidays after they found pooches from the city just didn't know how to cope with the countryside. Some were bashed by cows - others got stuck in rabbit holes and most had no idea how to sit still on the chairlift.

But now they get tips on avoiding problems on the courses - and after a hard day with farmyard animals or Alpine hiking there is a menu of freshly cooked gourmet food, doggy sun loungers and swimming pools - and even special fitness rooms for four-legged friends.

Owner Friederike Zaubek said that her dachshund Alfi had been a permanent guest and had always seemed to be so happy at the hotel that they decided to open it up to other dogs and add special doggy features. But that they had seen that city dogs needed a bit of extra instruction to get the most of the visit.

The menus created by the hotel chefs especially for dogs were all tested in advance by Alfi - including freshly cooked beef with oats or carrots with salmon and potato.

Portions of course depend on the size of the dog - said Friederike.
