Styria increases vineyard area

The proof of the popularity of some Austrian wines if any was needed is clearly being seen in southern and eastern Styria where the amount of land allocated for vineyards has increased by 100 ha.

The proof of the popularity of some Austrian wines if any was needed is clearly being seen in southern and eastern Styria where the amount of land allocated for vineyards has increased by 100 ha.

That represents a consistent increase which in the last 10 years has seen the amount of land devoted to vineyards increased by 10 per cent to 4,300 ha.

The increase is against the EU trend. In most other EU countries the amount of space to vineyards has been declining.

In the early 1980s it was just 2,500 ha. Not all Austrian winegrowing regions are growing significantly – in Burgenland and Lower Austria last year the amount of land available to vineyards reportedly decreased slightly.
